EHM Group new owner of Koepelgevangenis Arnhem

Last year, it was announced that the Koepelgevangenis in Arnhem was acquired by Ter Steege Gebiedsontwikkeling and Explorius Vastgoedontwikkeling. Today, the above parties announced more news about the infill of the site and announced their collaboration with EHM Group. The characteristic monumental buildings, which formerly served as a prison, will be given a hotel and hospitality destination.

The former prison, designed by Johan Metzelaar in 1886, has known many lives: from penitentiary to prison, from house of detention to reception centre. The next destination is now also known: the Koepel in Arnhem will be given a hotel and catering function.

Special hospitality businesses

Gijs Takkenkamp of Ter Steege Area Development: “When we became owners of the site around the Koepelgevangenis together with Explorius in June 2018, we already had a clear idea of what we wanted to do with it. Together with the national government, the neighbourhood had drawn up a memorandum of principles, which we naturally used as a guide. In the period that followed, we were approached by various parties who wanted to work with us. EHM Group’s plans to realise a catering and hotel function in this historic prison fit best with the image we had in mind. Namely a multifunctional residential area combined with an attractive interpretation for the monumental buildings.”

Niek Broeze of Explorius Vastgoedontwikkeling: “The owners of EHM Group have developed and managed many exceptional hospitality businesses in the past. Of course, we discussed the possibilities and impossibilities a lot and well beforehand, as we are dealing with several municipal and national monuments. In addition, we attach great importance to the opinion of the neighbourhood and therefore, together with EHM Group, we intend to restart the participation process with the neighbourhood in May. We are very much looking forward to working together.”

Our ultimate goal is to create something that connects people.

Wouter Dekker, whose responsibilities within EHM Group include business development and expansion, says he is delighted with the purchase of the Koepelgevangenis. “Our company is privileged to operate special hospitality properties. It is great that we have been awarded the contract to work out the hospitality plans and realise an iconic stopping point, fitting into the overall development of Ter Steege and Explorius. We can’t wait to get started: creating something that connects people, both hotel guests and locals, is our ultimate goal. The aim is to be able to open the doors to the public in the third quarter of 2021.”
